Please Pray for World Homeless Day 10/10/10

On the 10th of the 10th 2010 millions of people around the world will mark World Homeless Day in many varied ways and change the lives of homeless people in their local community.

We all continue to see home foreclosures, job and employment losses, cuts to mental health and veterans services and a lack of affordable low income housing and homeless shelters. Please get involved by registering today (free) and become part of the change we can achieve globally !

With California's plans for early state prison inmate release, and cuts to drug and alcohol recovery treatment funding the time to volunteer is NOW !

*Redding Loaves and Fishes Christian food bank ministry has also seen an increase of homelessness here in Shasta County California, so we are pleased to promote World Homeless Day 10/10/10

Families, Children, Veterans, Everyone in this poor economy should have a safe place where they can go at night and sleep without fear and their civil and constitutional rights violated. That’s why we need "safe ground". California cities need safe “legalized” campgrounds where homeless folks can have clean water, bathrooms, and trash services.

Homeless beatings ? "Cruel and inhumane" Anti-Camping Ordinances ? Social Justice ? Homeless Constitutional and Civil Rights Violations ?

World Homeless Day 10/10/10 - Join Today ! - Protest International -  Act Local... Think Global!

*Redding Loaves and Fishes Christian food bank charity is also against practices and laws that unfairly single out homeless people, violate their constitutional rights, and criminalize them for everyday living and life-sustaining activites in Redding and Shasta County California as well.

The most obvious opportunity World Homeless Day presents is to get in touch with  your family, friends, and community about the many causes and solutions to homelessness. It's a time you can have a food or clothing drive or volunteer your time in a food bank or homeless shelter. It's a chance to write to local, state and national leaders to advocate for policies and programs that serve the homeless. Contact:

*schools
*churches
*charities
*service clubs
*news and media outlets (letters to editor, press release, etc.)
*businesses
*homeless advocates
*veterans organizations
*mental and social services
*domestic violence agencies
*drug and alcohol recovery groups
*candlelight vigil protests
*twitter, myspace, youtube, blogs and forums.

And ask the simple question: what are you doing for World Homeless Day?

World Homeless Day 10/10/10

Safe Ground Sacramento

"To Turn Lives Around"

"Being homeless, being in need, should not be a crime. And it can no longer be an invisible problem that we just turn away from, or that we assume can never be “solved.”

That’s why three of Sacramento’s largest and oldest homeless service organizations - Loaves & Fishes, Francis House, and S.H.O.C. – have banded together to find a solution to at least part of the problem.

Tough times demand creative solutions. Sacramento has public land that no one is using – land that, along with a unique “WorldShelter,” can provide a homeless person with a safe place to stay for only $2 a night.

We are asking the City to provide our homeless neighbors with the most basic human right – a safe place to be - and a safe place to rebuild lives - a place called “Safe Ground”

World Homeless Day 10/10/10

We have been working hard to defend the constitutional and civil rights of the poor and homeless men, women, children, and veterans here in Redding and Shasta County. Here is a recent radio interview discussing one of the civil rights issues we are STILL fighting for.

World Homeless Day 10/10/10

Urge California to Pass Homeless Hate Crime Law - Sign the Petition !

Targeting: Darrell Steinberg (California Senate President pro Tem)
Started by: Josie Raymond
On May 6, 2010, California's state Assembly voted to add the homeless to the list of groups under hate crime protections.

"Hate crime designation would increase the damages available for victims, which is meant to serve as a deterrent to attacks. Just as important would be the message to the homeless community that the U.S. justice system recognizes the plight of people living without reliable shelter.

Violence against the homeless has been on the rise over the last decade. Victims in the news in just the last couple weeks include a homeless man who was set on fire (but lived) while sleeping under a bridge in Virginia, a disabled homeless man who was beaten to death while living in the woods in South Carolina and a Michigan homeless man who lost an eye after he was randomly targeted and shot in the face with a paintball gun. Who will argue that these people were targeted for any reason other than their homelessness?

California's bill now goes to the state Senate for a vote. Tell California's Senate President pro Tem to join in the struggle to protect society's most vulnerable."
