Yet"Another Homeless Man Badly Beaten In Redding"
Thursday, 30 April 2009

Ryan Sabalow - April 30, 2009

"Hidden behind his glasses and under the left side of Jeffrey Smerber’s baseball cap brim are a greenish-black bruise and a scabbed-over, inch-long cut next to his eye.

Painful and tender, Smerber’s left eye is now forced into a perpetual squint.

“It’s gotten better,” the 51-year-old homeless man said today after lunch outside Living Hope Compassion Ministries in Redding California.

Smerber’s injuries may be healing, but he’s still reeling from the beating he received on Saturday night, a week after Timothy Lee Alcorn, a 48-year-old homeless man was beaten so badly he later died.

Smerber’s injuries weren’t nearly as severe as Alcorn’s but Redding police are nonetheless taking the case seriously.

Sgt. Dean Stainberg said an investigator was assigned to the case after Smerber’s beating was reported earlier this week. An officer interviewed Smerber and took pictures of his wounds.

The investigation is continuing and no suspects have been arrested.

But just days after Alcorn’s death, police worry there may be a trend of violence toward the homeless.

"Shasta County Homeless Working On Lawsuit Against Redding Police"
Friday, 27 March 2009

"David Delo is among the thousands of homeless living in Shasta County. He says its been getting more difficult to live within the city limits as Redding police officers crack down on illegal camping. Delo says many are warned, cited or sometimes even sent to jail. And when that happens, they're belongings are left behind.

"To have it disappear like that when you need it, it does tend to make you mad. And knowing that there's nothing you can do about it," Delo said.
Delo says their rights have been violated because their properties are thrown out before they can claim it. That's why Chris Solberg of the Redding Loaves and Fishes is filing a lawsuit against the city.

We believe everyone deserves SAFE GROUND!

There are over 1200 people sleeping outside every night in Sacramento and the numbers are growing!

Shelters are full, so for many the options are few: sleep in a car, if you have one, or break the law and sleep illegally on the streets.

Criminalize homelessness in this economy ? - This is unfair and unjust! - PROTEST !

Evangelical Militant Atheism...Religious Intolerance in Redding ?
Friday, 27 February 2009

Today the term "evangelical militant atheism" may be used by theists as an epithet for the "militant evolutionists who want to silence the idea of creation". It is sometimes used pejoratively to describe people who are considered to campaign too actively, in your face and outspokenly – or militantly – for atheism and against religion: "those who advocate the elimination of religion" as opposed to "progressive, enlightened people who are simply 'nonbelievers'.

Question : Do you think that there are modern prophets?
Monday, 25 August 2008

Yes, in the Bible, it is written, "Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophecy." But what is a Prophet ?, we read further,"But he who prophecies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men." and again "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church." (1 Corinthians 14 v. 3&4)

As a Christian, how do we obtain the spiritual gift of Prophecy ? Can we knock down people and call fire down from heaven like some T.V. pastors do ?, they sure make alot of money, Church's that are so rich they could be a bank.( 2 Thessalonians 2 v. 11, Revelation 13 v.13).

A plea for the poor
Monday, 28 May 2007

In a recent quote from an article, Camp sweeps spur debate, (City seeks policy on holding homeless' items), it could be misconstrued that I was casting dispersions on two of my fellow Christian non-profit organizations .I would like to take this opportunity to say this was not my intention, nor was it the reporters, and to apologize to the Good News Rescue Mission, and the Salvation Army, for any grief this misunderstanding may have brought. Please forgive me.

A Testimony
Friday, 11 May 2007
I started working at Redding Loaves and Fishes last January 2006. My family had moved from the Chico area that August in 2005. We found ourselves adjusting from living in a subdivision to living in a rural area with five acres and a whole lot of poison oak. Mind you, I had grown up in the area and I knew what a rare pleasure poison oak is, but that didn’t keep us from getting a full blown head to toe experience with the insidious plant. I was just finishing my last round of prednisone and feeling very sorry for disfigured self when I saw an article in the paper featuring Loaves and Fishes.

Additional 300 kids are suffering among the homeless
Friday, 30 March 2007

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Redding & Shasta County Homeless Continuum of Care's yearly meeting to discuss the results of their homeless census. Although Redding Loaves and Fishes, as well as the Redding Homeless Alliance believe the numbers really are significantly higher, Don Meeks presentation on the homeless, "myth or fact", was a refreshing fresh breath of truth for those who are trying to make a difference in the lives of those who are poor and less fortunate. Between Mr. Meeks presentation, and reporter Ryan Sabalow's concern for the homeless, as well as His attention to detail in His article, a great stride forward was made in the fight against homelessness. Well done !!

Being poor is not a crime
Saturday, 28 October 2006

In Las Vegas, bringing food to the park and handing it out to the homeless is punishable by six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

In Dallas, only approved churches, charities and individuals can serve the homeless only in approved locations. If not approved, you so much as offer a biscuit to a hungry person, you are subject to fines up to $2,000.

Now in Redding if you are one of the more than 3,000 homeless men, women, and children in Shasta County caught by a small campfire trying to keep warm within Redding's city limits, you can receive up to six months in jail, and a $1,000 fine.

Spiritual Warfare
Wednesday, 04 October 2006

There has been alot of talk about spiritual warfare as of late here in Redding and Shasta County, with some very good points being made. But what about our own brothers and sisters, in our own spiritual homes we call churches? What really is this thing called slaying in the spirit?, Holy laughter? Do we test the spirits?

Electricity finally restored after more than two weeks in dark

By Ryan Sabalow, Record Searchlight
June 29, 2006

LAKEHEAD -- Sixty-nine-year-old Barbara Boulanger's trailer home is tiny, but quaint.

Out front, an American flag hung lazily in the muggy heat of Tuesday morning. In the back, tomato plants, some nearly 6 feet tall, formed a surprisingly lush garden.

Dire Straits
Thursday, 29 June 2006

Over burdened by the tremendous need here in Redding and Shasta County, (Pantry is nearly empty, incoming funds are scarce, ) Redding Loaves and Fishes is calling out to the Christian community for help. Most charitable organizations have a difficult time receiving donations over the summer months, and as we are a new , reforming ministry, we are even more keenly aware of this fact. Quite frankly , due to a recent emergency at a trailer park in Lakehead, its come to our attention that Redding and Shasta County is grosely unprepared for an emergency or disaster of any proportion.
